We have a fantastic opportunity to join our nursing and midwifery leadership team as the Deputy Director of Midwifery and Nursing.

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our team, working closely with the Director of Midwifery and Nursing, Clinical Director, Divisional Operations Director. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring excellence in workforce management, service delivery, clinical quality, safety, and financial control within our division.

Main duties of the job

The Deputy Director of Midwifery and Nursing is a crucial role within the Divisional Management Team, reporting to the Divisional Director of Midwifery and Nursing Services (DoMN). This position focuses on ensuring high standards of patient care across gynecology, maternity, and neonatal services.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership and management for midwifery and nursing services, ensuring high-quality, efficient care.
  • Overseeing operational direction, governance, patient experience, and service sustainability.
  • Acting as the DoMN in daily clinical operations, handling recruitment, care standards, service transformation, and patient experience improvements.
  • Developing and maintaining clinical safety and quality systems, compliance with CQC standards, health and safety, patient complaints, incident reporting, and safeguarding.
  • Assisting senior management to meet workforce, service delivery, quality improvement, and safety objectives.
  • Working with the Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) and associated agencies to lead maternity service transformation according to national and local priorities.
  • Creating a supportive environment for midwifery and nursing staff across Gynaecology, Maternity and Neonatal Services

Education/Training/qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered Midwife and/or Nurse NMC registration Further evidence of management / leadership training [or experience] and continuous professional development Relevant Postgraduate qualification in management or leadership Master’s level qualification in Midwifery or associated subject (or portfolio of evidence working at that level) Demonstrates evidence of ongoing continuous professional development

  • Substantive experience at senior leadership role, Proven experience of building effective partnerships and alliances both internal and external to the organisation, Experience of developing and implementing a perinatal strategy Proven management experience and the ability to lead staff in achieving complex outcomes Significant budget management experience Adult and Children’s Safeguarding experience Experience of dealing with service users’ complaints and investigating informal and formal complaints, being able to lead in writing compassionate responses and reports, identifying learning and implementing change.

Desirable criteria

  • Previous experience as Deputy Director or Head of Midwifery and Nursing, xperience of leading on Clinical Governance and Risk Management / safety and quality systems and processes

Leading with compassion with the ability to act as effective facilitator, coach and clinical supervisor Investigation skills to deal with complaints and issues of conduct and performance Ability to write and lead on management reports identifying investigation findings, clearly documented with appropriate judgement and actions needed Able to document observations, results, decisions and actions etc. effectively in patient notes and communicate these effectively to appropriate members of the multidisciplinary team Able to communicate complex information to large groups, members of the multidisciplinary team throughout the division and Trust Able to advise Trust staff on best practice across the Trust in relation to gynaecology and perinatal services. Highly effective communication skills - able to communicate verbally and written to staff, patients and relatives including in situations of conflict & distress, ensuring that communication is tailored to the person.
