The role

Applications are invited for a Course Manager to provide daily management of the EPSRC-funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Technology-Enhanced Chemical Synthesis (TECS), at the School of Chemistry, University of Bristol. The TECS CDT, and its precursor CDTs, have for the last 15 years been a flagship centre for training and research in state-of-the-art advances in synthetic chemistry, across the organic/inorganic/biological, synthetic technology, digital chemistry, and materials chemistry interfaces.

What will you be doing?

The Course Manager will be responsible for managing the postgraduate training course that runs for 8 months of each cohort’s first year. You will facilitate the development the students’ technical and teamworking skills in association with training and learning sessions led by academic staff, and provide day-to-day support to the 10-15 members of each new cohort during this period. After the initial training period is complete, students join research groups for their PhD projects supervised by academic staff and you will continue to support each cohort of students through facilitating group training and learning activities, overseeing placements with industrial partners, and co-organising the summer schools.

You will be responsible to, and work with the Director to ensure the smooth running of the centre. You will liaise with the CDT Director and CDT Administrator in weekly planning meetings to discuss operational, educational, financial or other issues arising. You will liaise with members of the CDT Management Committee in monthly meetings to discuss all operational and strategic aspects of the centre. You will have day-to-day responsibility for budgeting to ensure correct levels of expenditure during the lifetime of the grant. You will have a role in providing pastoral care and academic leadership for members the CDT cohort, and you will be responsible for liaising with the industrial sponsors of the CDT. You will show initiative and be proactive in helping identify and develop activities and training programs for the students.

You should apply if

In order to apply, you will need to have a relevant postgraduate research degree, or be working towards one, in an area of chemical synthesis, with skills and knowledge in relevant aspects of organic and inorganic chemistry. You will have excellent interpersonal, communication and organisational skills. Some experience of teaching at an undergraduate level, and working with or in an industrial context, and awareness of the differences between research in academic and industrial contexts is also desirable.
