Job Requirements/Description

Emergency Department (ED) at Bristol Eye Hospital (BEH) is a tertiary ophthalmic centre treating ophthalmic emergencies 365 days a year 7 days a week.

We are open 7 days a week. The post holder will be required to work shifts from 07.45hrs -18.00hrs, 09:30hrs – 18:00hrs or 07:45hrs– 16:30hrs incl. Bank Holidays. No night shifts! You will be expected to work 1 weekend in 4 or more if required. You will be required to cover late shifts in the department as dictated by the service needs.

You will be required to work various shifts to cover the department.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 or 7 with extensive ophthalmic experience to join our team and enhance their clinical skills and knowledge.

Main duties of the job

  • To be able to triage effectively and prioritise patients accordingly
  • To be highly proficient using a slit lamp to assess patients
  • To see and treat patients independently and work as a Non- Medical prescriber/work towards a Non-Medical prescribing qualification.
  • To be able to see, treat & discharge patients without medical input
  • To liaise with medical staff when appropriate
  • To be able to identify tests for patients prior to medical staff examination
  • Perform Venepuncture, cannulation and take swabs as required.
  • Support junior colleagues with their learning and contribute with teaching

Essential criteria

  • Previous Ophthalmic experience
  • Good knowledge of the A&P of the eye
  • Proficient in diagnosing anterior segment pathologies using a slit lamp
  • Proven experience within in an ED setting

  • Goldmanns Tonometry
  • OCT Interpretation

Qualifications and Training
