Job Requirements/Description

A great opportunity has arisen at the University of Bristol for a full-time Groundsperson working in an established team of Grounds staff maintaining, enhancing, and developing many of our interesting modern and historic landscapes, including working at the Historic Goldney Estate as well as more modern properties like the Student Halls at Stoke Bishop and throughout Clifton, along with a range of smaller properties across the diverse estate.

What will you be doing?

You will be working within a team of three, a Team Leader and another Groundsperson, and will be part of a wider team of Grounds and Gardens staff. You will be part of a team which delivers a professional grounds service to ensure the University’s green spaces and grounds are maintained as a welcoming, accessible, safe & attractive environment for students, staff & visitors.

The role is positioned within the Gardens and Grounds team, providing the University with a comprehensive and flexible grounds maintenance service, with the goal of enhancing safe and aesthetically pleasing grounds, enabling teaching, learning and research to take place in a well-cared for and pleasant environment. Grassland management is a large part of the role, and our grasslands range from wildflower meadows as well as grassland managed for the benefit of nature to more formal University Quad lawns (no fine turf management).

Other tasks include strimming, leaf clearance, street cleaning operations, installation of street furniture, arboriculture work, winter services (gritting/snow clearance), event prep, etc. On an infrequent basis, the Groundsperson may be assigned basic horticultural responsibilities, such as weeding and pruning.

You should apply if

As a Groundsperson you should have an awareness of the environment, the weather, changing conditions around you, and be ready and able to adapt. You will have a proven flexible and adaptable attitude to work with high degree of self-motivation with a proven ability to complete relevant practical work (mowing, machinery use, etc) to a high standard.

You should have a good attention to detail and be a good team player who is able to prioritise and hold the ability to complete tasks safely using your own initiative.

You will have a good understanding of Health & Safety, full driving license, and ideally hold certificates of competence such as PA1 & PA6, although a willingness to attain these would be acceptable as we are keen to develop the skills of our teams and provide you with an environment within which you can develop further skills.

You should also have good communication and interpersonal skills and be happy to assist and work with our other grounds or horticultural teams across the estate.
