Job Requirements/Description

BG12 - £40,221 - £43,421 (Full time and Part time hours available, Permanent.)

As a HR Consultant within the Children and Education Directorate, you’ll provide specialist advice and guidance on a wide range of HR issues for our Education Service and Schools Community, following the Council’s HR policy, procedural frameworks, and relevant legislation.

You’ll either be a Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD), or have the appropriate and demonstrable experience, knowledge, and skills, with a commitment to becoming one.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage complex HR casework and initiatives, ensuring an exceptional level of service is provided.
  • Provide specialist HR advice and guidance to schools in line with statutory guidance.
  • Utilise your generalist employment law knowledge relevant to HR practice in local government.

Additionally, you will develop comprehensive HR policies and procedures to meet legislative changes and the evolving needs of schools.

This requires:

  • Engaging and negotiating with a diverse range of stakeholders, including trade unions and senior leaders, to gather feedback and gain buy-in.
  • Collaborating with senior HR colleagues.
  • Interpreting and applying policy and guidance consistently and pragmatically.
  • You’ll also stay informed of changes in employment law and best practices in employee relations, advising on potential implications for schools and the wider organisation.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Have strong communication skills and the ability to confidently challenge assumptions, practices, and behaviours that don’t align with council values.
  • Advocate for positive change when necessary.
  • Possess HR generalist expertise, with specific knowledge of schools, particularly in employee relations, disciplinary, and grievance investigations.
  • Be interested in education from an HR perspective.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Show discretion, resilience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
